Photography Q&A // Photoshop sharpening

From time to time I get questions about how I do this and that related to photography, so I have decided I will do some blog posts where  share some of my small tricks related to photography and editing. If this can help out one of you out there, my goal with this post is reached:)

Q: How do you sharpen your images?

A: To me, sharpening is the last step of my photoshop editing workflow. There are lots of ways of doing sharpening in PS, but I prefer the High Pass Filter way of sharpening my images.

1: Open and edit your photo in Photoshop.
2: For simplicity in this tutorial, flatten your image (if you have several layers) by selecting menu “Layer” and “Flatten Image”
3: Create a copy of the background layer by e.g. dragging the background layer down to the “new layer” button, so that you end up having a copy of your background layer:

4: Select the new background copy layer, add High Pass Filter from menu “Filter” – “Other” – “High Pass”. Select a pixel radius where the underlying image BARELY can be shown, like in the example below, and select OK:

5: And here’s the trick; various blending-modes work with a “high passed” filtered layer. Personally I usually prefer “Linear Light” (see black ring in image below), but try out other blending modes like e.g. Overlay, Soft Light or Hard Light. Try it out and find out what you like:)If the sharpening effect is too harsh, reduce Opacity on the high passed layer.

6: And the final result might look like this:

Now you can try it out on your favorite image;)

Wedding – Bryllup sneakpeak // Marianne & Odd Magne

Photographing my own brother and his beautiful wife Marianne at their most important day became a much more emotional experience than I first anticipated. It also turned out to be my most extraordinary photographic event for me in a very long time. The full blog post from their wedding will come later… but just wanted to publish a little sneak preview:)

Wedding Sneak preview – Bryllup Sniktitt // Merethe og Atle // Fotograf Trondheim

Last weekend we had the pleasure of attending the wedding of a couple of good friends, Merethe and Atle, which I also had the joy of photographing their big day together with Kristin R Eide, a great local photograper at Nordfjordeid. Here is a sneak peak of some of the “getting-prepared”-shots I took last Saturday morning.

More photos will come in a blog post later on.

Enjoy:)

Travel – Beautiful Norway // Fotograf Trondheim

Travelling in Norway can be a truly amazing way of spending holidays. This weekend we were driving past Hornindalsvatn, which is the deepest lake in Europe (514 metres deep). The scenery around the lake is breathtaking. Just wanted to share this one to give you a glimpse of beautiful Norway in winter:)

This photo is taken in the afternoon, and the light from the setting sun is reflected from the mountain tops.

Wedding – Bryllup // Maria & Erlend – Full post //

The day was filled with excitement, joy, happiness and lots of love. The wedding was set in a wonderful winter scene. Even if the sun were hidden behind clouds and fog almost all day; just as the two lovebirds were about to finish the wedding ceremony, the sun worked its way through the clouds, and gave the newly wed couple a glimpse of the setting sun as they walked out of the church.

Even if it was cold, we had a really great photo session after the ceremony. I’ve said it before, but you guys are so easy going and fun to photograph!
Thanks for having me taking your photos.

Sneak preview – Sniktitt // Maria & Erlend //Bryllupsfotograf Trondheim

It was cold, some raindrops were falling, and the fog laid heavy down the hillsides. But the two lovebirds seemed to enjoy their most important day, filling it with love and happiness, celebrating the beginning of the rest of their life together. We had a great photo session, you guys were so fun (and easy!) to photograph! I had a blast:)

Just wanted to post a little sneak preview from their wedding. More snapshots from their big day will follow in a complete Maria and Erlend-wedding blog post later:)

Personal: Finding new ways :)

Sometimes I see beautiful photographs taken by other skillful photographers that I really admire.. and wonder how to they do it. These last couple of weeks, I have made a little challenge with myself; I would find a couple of photos I really found beautiful, and I would use the inspiration from these to take even better photos myself. This includes both taking the picture, but also process it and find my own style in the post-processing. It was also important for me not to just copy the original photos I found, but take the ideas I got from others further, into developing my own photographic style.

Just wanted to share one of the results from this little personal challenge:)

Pre-Wedding // Bilder før bryllup: Maria&Erlend

It was cold… about -11 or -12 degrees C, but Maria and Erlend wanted to get some pre-wedding-shots before the “real thing” coming up soon. It was really fun photographing the two lovebirds; we all laughed, smiled and had a really great time! Below are some of the shots we took during the relatively short photo session (I wouldn’t be responsible for forcing the couple to stay too long in the cold, getting sick before the Big Day is no fun…).

I am really looking forward to shoot their wedding!:)

What is missing in these shots?

Yes… you probably guessed it… the wedding couple… The church is booked and the venue for the reception is ready… rings are ordered and the wedding outfit has been tried on and found perfect…:)

Just wanted to share a couple of shots taken while preparing for three(!) weddings I am going to photograph in February. I am really excited about getting the opportunity to capture the most important day for some really wonderful couples:)I have always found a lot of inspiration in wedding photography, and can’t wait to get going:)

The beauty in winter

We have had a wonderful winter these last couple of weeks. Yes, it has been freeeezzing cold here in Scandinavia, but at the same time it has been really beautiful. Since I am in the final phase of finalizing my Master’s dissertation these days, there is not much time for photography (unfortunately:(). But yesterday, the light was so insanely beautiful with the sun just above the horizon, and some really thick fog above the ground, so I decided to take a short brake from the writing, and get some fresh air:)These are taken just a couple of minutes walk from my house:

The larger picture…

As you might have guessed, I have tried to use the Christmas holidays to think and reflect. I addition to all the eating:)Not sure if I have moved the history of great thinkers and philosophers so much further… but still…:)

A very good friend of mine posted a couple of days ago a new years eve greeting at Facebook with the comment; “Happy new year; may we all be better at always seeing the larger picture“.

Let us remind ourselves throughout 2010 that most of us living in the western world are lucky. Yes there might be issues with friends or family, or problems at work which might seem like mountains impossible to pass. Or someone close is seriously ill. And all of this hurts. And it is allowed to be hurt.

But let us also spend some time in 2010 on focusing at the larger picture…
